What do we know?
The role of government
and the State is being redefined - it has been subjected to considerable
change through the 1980s and 1990s. Keeping it Together State
and Civil Society in Australia edited by Adam Farrer and Jane
Inglis explores the changing role of Government and its relationship
to civil society. The
Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) has a
wide range of resources on related topics such as the changing
role of government, tendering and the changing nature of work.

Funding
The most comprehensive
reference on sources of non-government funding in Australia is the Australian
Directory of Philanthropy from Philanthropy
Australia.
Another useful reference
is the WESTIR Funding Calendar which
lists all the Federal and NSW Government Funding Sources plus some
trusts. The Funding Calendar costs $38.50 and can be purchased from

Tendering
SACOSS
Tendering Handbook - October 2003
Based on extensive consultations with public servants and community organisations,
it is a practical guide to tendering today, covering essential background information
and techniques for tendering success.

Enterprise and Business
If you are looking
for inspiration read: Filthy Rich and Other Non-profit fantasies by
Richard Steckel. It is available from Australian
Institute of Management Bookshop. Another useful resource
is Non-Profits in Business, published
by WorkVentures, which includes 24 cases studies of non-profit businesses.

Social Ventures Australia
Social
Ventures Australia (SVA), Australia’s first venture philanthropy
organisation, was established in 2002 by the Benevolent Society, The
Smith Family, WorkVentures and AMP Foundation. Its
aim is to integrate the Australian public, corporate and social sectors
to create entrepreneurial,
innovative and results-driven solutions
to Australia’s social problems.

Sponsorship
Dancing
as Fast As We Can Keeping in Step with Sponsorship has
been written for arts organisations. It is also relevant for Neighbourhood
Centres. It provides an easy read introduction to sponsorship.

The Sponsorship
Manual written
by Edward Geldard and Laurel Sinclair gives and introduction to
sponsorship and includes practical hands on information to assist
organisations and individuals seeking sponsorship. It is available
from The Sponsorship Unit Pty Ltd.
The Australian National
Audit Office has a Best
Practice Guide for the Management of Corporate sponsorship (April
1997). While this guide has been prepared for Commonwealth agencies
many of the issues raised are also relevant for Neighbourhood and Community
Centres. It can be downloaded.

Fundraising
Chapter 9 of the Industry
Commission Inquiry into Charitable Organisations In Australia provides
an overview of who is doing what fundraising and how. It notes
the 50 largest community organisation in Australia raised $277
million in fundraising (18% of their total budgets).
The Fundraising
Institute - Australia is a professional association
of fundraisers. They have more than 1000 members. If you want to
talk with a professional
fundraising consultant they can put you in touch with their members.

Fundraising Act 1991 an organisation wishing to raise money
for charitable purposes - a fundraising appeal - must hold authority
